Psychiatrist vs. Psychologist

These two providers sometimes get confused with each other. Let's take a look and see how each could partner with your family. 

 

What is the difference?

PSYCHIATRIST
Medical doctor who treats and diagnoses mental health conditions. They can prescribe meds with a Psychiatric Evaluations that can average 1.5hrs and once established, can have periodic medication checks. 

PSYCHOLOGIST
Has a PhD in clinical psychology. They treat mental health conditions through various therapy models. They do provide in-depth assessment and diagnosis with a Psychological Evaluations that can average 4 hours and be over multiple sessions. They do not prescribe meds. 

When to see whom?

PSYCHIATRIST
Emotional dysregulation, withdrawal, or consistent physical affects that impact sleep or eating. In addition, thought of suicide, self-harm, or substance abuse. 

PSYCHOLOGIST 

Early intervention for changes emotionally or developmentally and situational difficulty such as chronic stress, managing trauma, or brain injury. Often used for coordinating academic accommodations. 

 

Can these providers work together?

Yes, they can work together to help create an even better plan of care. It often starts with one discipline and joins up with the other, coordinating with other providers.
