Daily Routines

A routine is an established pattern of activities, such as tasks or chores aimed at bringing order and efficiency to everyday life. Building routines brings predictability to the day. This reduces stress for children, helping them better thrive in their environment. No matter their socioeconomic status, or abilities, daily routines can benefit all families.

BENEFITS:

  • Positive developmental outcomes

    - increased self-regulation

    - increased executive function

  •    Better emotional and behavioral regulation

  •    Increased cognitive scores

  •    Tolerance for delayed gratification

HOW TO DEVELOP A DAILY ROUTINE

1. Start with what you have. What natural rhythms does your family have?

2. What routine would you like to start? (Morning, car, school prep, family devotional, dinner time, bedtime.)

3. Write down all the things you would like to happen. What is reasonable for your child to do? You may need to research what is age-appropriate for your child.

4. Break tasks into steps for your child.

5. Set the mood. Be excited about the new routine.

6. Teach it to your child each day.

- Start with one step at a time and build up.

  - Be consistent

- Model the routine for your child

7. Be gracious; it takes time.

- It is easy to feel rushed. Pause and remember you are training up your child (Proverbs 22:6).
